I’ll be honest… there are days when asking my child to put their shoes on feels like
shouting instructions into a black hole. “Shoes on, please!” … nothing. “Shoes…?”
Still nothing. By the third request, I start wondering if I need to learn interpretive
dance just to get my point across.
Parenting requires a level of patience that deserves its own Olympic medal. We
get it—it’s hard! But the good news is, there are gentle, practical, and even fun ways
to help your child become a better listener (without you sounding like a broken
record).
- Get Down to Their Level
Instead of calling across the room, crouch down so you’re eye-to-eye. It’s easier for
them to focus when they can see your face—and it shows you’re fully engaged. - Use Their Name First
Before giving an instruction, say their name to grab attention. It’s a small change, but
it signals “This is for you” in their busy little world. - Keep It Short & Sweet
Long instructions? Lost in translation. Keep directions clear and simple—think “Coat
on, please” instead of “Go upstairs, grab your coat from your room, then come back
here.” - Make It Fun
Turn directions into a game. “Can you hop to the door while wearing your coat?”
turns a boring task into a challenge they want to win. - Offer Choices
Kids love feeling in control. Instead of “Put your shoes on,” try “Do you want to wear
your red shoes or your blue shoes?” They’re still putting shoes on—just with more
buy-in. - Acknowledge Their World
If they’re in the middle of play, respect it. Say, “I see you’re building something
amazing! As soon as you finish this piece, can you come to the table?”
- Praise the Listening
When they follow instructions, celebrate it! A cheerful “Thanks for listening so well!”
reinforces the behaviour you want to see.
Final Thought:
Helping your child listen isn’t about being perfect (spoiler: no parent is). It’s about
making small changes that make listening easier for them—and life easier for you.
And on those days when patience runs thin? Remember, you’re not alone. We’re all
out here asking tiny humans to put their shoes on… for the fifth time.
